Playing audio from scratch

Hi all,

I need to convert a data stream into an acoustic format for machine-to-machine transmission.
I need to know how I can
- reserve memory space for a sample buffer (size 48000Hz*16bit, mono)
- go into that buffer and set manually some samples from 0 to maximum, depending on my code to transmit
- after that, play the sample from the sound card
