Direct connection to the ADO

I'm running windows 7 and Delphi 7.
I understand different versions of windows uses different *.dll's

I'm trying to understand how the TADODataset uses the Windows ADO
This may be easier than trying to write a Unique DataSet of my own

So I want to find a *.pas file that connects to the ADO and some info to use that file and try accessing the a database with the ADO.
Any directions please.
