Default Using MySQL as a Database

All I want to do is use MySQL as a database. No server is involved, nothing mysterious. I want to be able to create tables and then use the database in a Delphi application. Most of what I see is always involving servers and web sites and that's just not what I need. I have an app and a database, period. I have tried Workbench and looked at Heidi (which wants a web site) and just can't create the database. This has to be easy but not for me - I'm feeling dumb. Need your help.

MySQL is overkill for a single user database.

There are other alternatives.

TDBF - from source forge (Easy to find on Google)

DBISAM - Not free but excellent with small overhead and no DLL's

There are many others.

To use MySQL you could try ZEOS but I am pretty sure you will not do it without distributing DLL's and other files.

I really believe MySQL is a big overkill for a single user application

Thanks, for the reply. I realize MySQL is for bigger stuff but what I'm trying to do is learn how to use it so I can use it for some CMS applications down the line. It appears most of them use MySQL so I better find out how to use it. My big problem right now is being able to actually create the database and tables. I need help with that process.

I would suggest ZEOS

I think you have to give a couple of DLL's in your app directory but thats easy.

I am uncertain if you can do an embedded server with MySQL but it
will definitely connect.

I think others may use dbExpress

Both of these are used to create the databases. You can use the command line tool but it is easier to do it visually using either tool. I don't know where you get the idea that either of them "wants a web site".

If all you want to do is create tables, it is very easy to do by writing your CREATE TABLE SQL script and run it using mysqld. See the MySQL documentation on using the command line utilies for this type of thing.

There are several ways to connect to MySQL using Delphi, the easiest is using Zeos Library components but you can also use ADO if you also installl the MySQL ODBC driver.
